【あらすじ】
19世紀後半、中部ロシアのとある郡。社会改革の挫折を背景に、知識人層の間に深い失望と倦怠が広がっていた。かつては改革への情熱に燃えた農民局終身委員ニコライ・アレクセーヴィチ・イワーノフも、そのような挫折感を抱く一人であった。多額の借金返済に加え、ユダヤ人である彼の妻アンナは肺病になり、常に漠然とした不安が付きまとう。このような状況下で、イワーノフは、病に伏す妻への愛情が薄れていくのを感じていた。
更に、同居する没落貴族の叔父シャベーリスキイ、怪しい儲け話を持ちかける遊び人ボールキン、己の正義感から彼を責め立てる若い医者リヴォーフなどといった周囲の人々もイワーノフを苦しめる。
こうした煩わしさから、彼は次第に自分自身を憐れむようになる。
漠然とした不安から少しでも逃れようと、イワーノフは友人の地方自治会長レーベジェフの家に毎日のように通う。彼はそこでレーベジェフの娘サーシャと仲を深めるのだが……
